Carotid Artery Stent Procedures (CAS) are rapidly becoming
an acceptable alternative for treating high-risk patients with carotid artery
disease. Recent clinical trials, such as SAPPHIRE and CAVATAS, have shown CAS
using a distal protection device (EPD) in high-risk patients to be at least
equivalent to the gold standard of treatment, carotid endarterectomy (CEA).
The CAS procedure is not an entry-level procedure. A successful carotid
intervention requires a thorough knowledge of anatomy, equipment, patient
history, evaluation, and procedure. For this reason, Cordis Endovascular has
developed a comprehensive carotid artery stent education system (CASES). The
CASES program is designed to facilitate competence with the use of the Cordis
Carotid Stent System.
